The MasterCard Foundation Scholarship for African Students is open for Application at Michigan State University, USA

The MasterCard Foundation is partnering with over 10 recognized universities and higher institutions around the world to offer the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, a $500 million education initiative that will provide talented yet economically disadvantaged students from developing countries, particularly from Africa, with comprehensive support for secondary and university education. The scholarship will be offered to 15,000 African students for 10 years.

3. Undergraduate & Masters MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program at the University of California, Berkeley

At the University of California Berkeley, the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program will provide holistic support—financial, academic, social, and career counseling—to 113 students from Sub-Saharan Africa from 2012 to 2020. UC Berkeley will receive $30 million in funding

4. Rotary Peace Fellowship for Masters and Professional Programs

Rotary International offers the fully funded Rotary Peace Fellowship for master’s degrees and Professional Development Certificates for young professionals around the world.

5. 7UP Harvard Business School Scholarship for Nigerian Students

The 7UP Harvard Business School Scholarship was created by Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc of Nigeria to commemorate its 50th anniversary and aligns with the company’s overall vision of creating a greener future for promising Nigerians. The scholarship is for a Nigerian citizen. Note that the scholarship covers tuition, board, and travel expenses for both years of the MBA program.

7. MMMF Scholarship for Women from Developing Countries in the US & Canada

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in those countries. The MMMF offers scholarships for women from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada. Note that the MMMF award grants are approximately $12,000 each.

8. African Presidential Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan USA

The African Presidential Scholars Program offers early-career faculty from Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, and Uganda the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Michigan USA during residencies of two to six months in Uganda in the fields of African Heritage, African Social Research, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Additionally, at the University of Michigan, scholars will have access to library and research materials to forward their research programs, scholarly writing, course development, doctoral work, or other relevant activities.

9. Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa- LAWA Fellowship Program

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over 50 women’s human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future. The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $42,065 benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional development training.

Since 1974, IFS has provided more than 7,000 research grants to young scientists in some 100 developing countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. 11. Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship For Women From Developing Countries in the USA

The International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRA), USA invites applications for the Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship for Women from Developing Countries in Peace and Development Studies. The scholarship has been awarded biennially since the first award was made in Groningen, Netherlands in July 1990. Additionally, every other year one woman receives school expenses for $5,000 per year for two years.

12. McGill University Canada – MasterCard Foundation Scholarships

McGill University, Canada, is partnering with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to offer undergraduate scholarships for African students for 10 years. Scholarships will be available at the Masters level beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year.

13. University of Toronto Canada MasterCard Foundation Scholarship

The University of Toronto and The MasterCard Foundation are pleased to offer the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University to develop Africa’s next generation of leaders. Thanks to the Foundation’s visionary support, U of T can now provide 67 African students with one of the world’s top-ranked educations—in one of the world’s most multicultural cities.

14. the University of British Columbia – MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program for African Students – Canada

The University of British Columbia, Canada partnered with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program to grant $25 Million Scholarships for African students; Over the next 10 years, 77 undergraduate and 35 master’s degree students will go through the Program.

15. Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship Program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Mathematics

This is a two-year fellowship program for outstanding Ph.D. students nominated by their universities. To be eligible for this fellowship, you must apply during your second or third year of PhD studies. Note that fellowships are granted by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

16. Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships in Canada for Developing Countries

The Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships are offered annually to the most talented doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences to encourage emerging talents in Canada and Developing countries. Up to 15 Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation. Note that the Scholarship of up to $180,000.

Scholarships in the UK

17. Commonwealth Scholarship

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university, or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the Commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university body is responsible for its selection process, and in most cases, it will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Note that approximately 200–230 scholarships are awarded each year.

18. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since its establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150 awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).

19. Chevening Scholarship

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship Programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. In 2011–12, over 700 Chevening Scholars were studying at universities across the UK. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Additionally, Chevening awards enable scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.

20. UCL/AET Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries UK

University College London (UCL) and the Africa Educational Trust (AET) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable students from Africa who are financially unable to study in the UK to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Two full bursaries are available annually. Each bursary consists of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s program of study, as well as economy air travel to and from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary holder’s degree program.

21. UCL (United World Colleges): Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries, UK

The University College London (UCL) collaborates with the United World Colleges (UWC) in a financial aid scheme to enable graduates of UWC who are financially unable to study in the UK to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. 22. Reach Oxford Scholarships for Undergraduate Students for Developing Countries, University of Oxford

Several Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK, under any undergraduate course of study except medicine, due to the course length and expense. Note that the scholarship covers university and college fees, a full grant for living expenses, and a return flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.

23. Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships: Full-fee Scholarships

Loughborough University, UK, offers full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa through the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. Note that the scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

24. Loughborough University Graduate School International Scholarships

Loughborough University offers over 100 postgraduate scholarships for the 2011–2012 academic year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union (EU). Additionally, these scholarships will be worth 25% of the program tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

26. Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship at the University of Edinburgh, UK

The Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship is open to all African students (with preference to West Africa) who have applied to an on-campus LLM or the on-campus MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Edinburgh Law School. The scholarship will cover the costs of postgraduate tuition fees for one academic year. Additionally, the successful applicant will also be given a partial maintenance grant (£6500) to help fund their studies at the University of Edinburgh.

27. Wolfson Full Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities- University of Oxford

The Wolfson Foundation seeks to support excellence through the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in Humanities for international students at the University of Oxford. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees and a grant for living costs of at least £15,000 per year. Funds for research and training costs will also be available to scholars.

31. Eni Full Masters Scholarship for African Students from Angola, Nigeria, and Ghana—University of Oxford, UK

St. Antony’s College Oxford, in partnership with the international integrated energy company Eni, is offering three students from African universities in Angola, Ghana, and Nigeria the opportunity of fully funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake postgraduate study at the Master’s level at the University of Oxford, commencing in October 2011. Moreover, the Eni Masters scholarship strengthens African leadership.

32. West Africa Scholarship Scheme at Durham University, UK

Durham University awards three postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from West Africa- Benin, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo. Each scholarship is a one-year postgraduate tuition fee waiver, one each in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, Faculty of Science, and Durham Business School. Students do not have to pay for their tuition fees but are only responsible for accommodation and living costs during their stay in the UK.

33. Rhodes Annual Scholarships for International Students at the University of Oxford

Each year, the Rhodes scholarship is offered to about 83 Rhodes Scholars selected from 14 countries or groupings of countries around the world (including select African Countries) to study for a postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford. They are outstanding young women and men of diverse backgrounds and interests who show strong potential to be public-spirited leaders for the world’s future.

34. Oppenheimer Fund scholarships for South African Students at the University of Oxford

The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships are open to applicants who are ordinarily resident in South Africa applying to start any new degree-bearing course, except for PGCert and PGDip courses, at the University of Oxford. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African Universities. Additionally, scholarship recipients receive a financial support grant of up to £6500 for fees or living costs.

35. Ferguson Scholarships at SOAS University of London, UK for Students from Africa

Through the generosity of the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, three Ferguson scholarships have been established for African Students (African nationals and residents in Africa), who wish to undertake a taught masters course at SOAS. Each Ferguson Scholarship is valued at £14,956 and lasts for one year. Note that the scholarships can be used for fees and the remainder towards maintenance.

36. UK- Waverley Fund Full Masters Scholarship in African Studies

The Waverley Fund awards scholarships for Masters (MSc) in African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers. The African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, UK, was launched in October 2004 and attracts extremely high-quality graduates. Note that 100% of university and college fees and a grant for living expenses of £13,590 p/a (including return flights) will be awarded for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course.

37. UK – CASTME Scholarship for postgraduate students from Commonwealth Countries

The CASTME Scholarship is an annual scholarship award for postgraduate students from commonwealth countries to study for a master’s Degree at the University of Westminster UK. There is one general scholarship (i.e. students from any Commonwealth country may apply) and another for students from Mauritius. In particular, the candidates will need to show how this award will enable them to enhance the teaching of Science, Technology, or Mathematics in their home country. 38. University of Sheffield UK Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships for Nigerian Students

The University of Sheffield is pleased to offer a range of undergraduate (BA, BSc, BEng, MEng) and postgraduate scholarships to students from Nigeria who show exceptional academic potential and are starting their studies at the University of Sheffield in September.

The University of Edinburgh offers one full-time Master’s scholarship for eligible programs offered by the University through the Edinburgh Global Health Academy Master’s Scholarship for African and Developing Countries. The Skoll Scholarship is a competitive scholarship for incoming MBA students at Oxford University who pursue entrepreneurial solutions for urgent social and environmental challenges. The Scholarship provides funding and exclusive opportunities to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and investors. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a cost scholarship for postgraduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge, England for international students. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is open to citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA.

43. Mansion House Masters Scholarship for African Students

The roots of the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme can be traced back to 1997, when Sir Richard Nichols, then Lord Mayor of the City of London, was particularly impressed during his overseas visits by the high regard in which the City is held by foreign business communities and by the number of students who wished to study in the UK in schools and colleges through business attachments, executive exchanges, and management training. Now firmly established, the scheme supports the funding of students from overseas taking Masters level degree courses at British universities or enabling business trainees or officials to undertake study or training in financial and related business activities. Awards vary in size but are usually in the region of £5,000 to £7,500.

44. University of Edinburgh Distance Learning Master’s Scholarship, UK

Each year, the University of Edinburgh, the UK offers up to four Edinburgh Global Health Academy Distance Learning Master’s Scholarship for International students from Africa and Developing Countries. Note that the scholarship is mainly for medical/global health and education-related courses. Additionally, each distance learning scholarship will have a total value throughout the program of £9,000 which will be deducted from the tuition fee for the entire part-time program of study.

45. Clutton-Brock Scholarship for Postgraduate Students from Zimbabwe

The objective of this scholarship scheme is to establish – as a permanent memorial to the late Guy Clutton Brock, Hero of Zimbabwe and graduate of Magdalene College – scholarships at the postgraduate level at the University of Cambridge for the benefit of students from Zimbabwe. Subject to the availability of funds, it aims to have up to two Clutton-Brock Scholars in residence at any one time for

  • (1) a one-year graduate taught course, leading to a postgraduate qualification (usually the MPhil degree), and
  • (2) a three-year course of research, leading to the PhD degree.

46. 200 Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for Developing Countries

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing Countries to Study for Undergraduate and Master’s Degree Programs The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses in the amount of SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. Note that the travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10,000.  (€ 1098.7249)

48. Italy- UCSC Scholarship for African Students

UCSC, Italy, offers 12 full Masters scholarships that include tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full scholarships and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. Additionally, the full scholarships include tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates who do not qualify for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the expense of the student.

49. VLIR- UOS Masters Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study for a master’s or training program in Flanders, Belgium. 180 Masters and 70 training scholarships in Belgium will be awarded to students from developing countries in 2012 (50% for African students and almost 50% for women). Note that the scholarship covers all related expenses (full cost).

50. 150 CUD Scholarships Program in Belgium for Developing Countries

Within the program for international courses and training programs, the Commission Universitaire pour le développement (CUD) grants 150 scholarships for participation in the courses and 70 for participation in the training programs. Only applicants originating in developing countries qualify for selection. Additionally, to be eligible, candidates must reside and work in their country at the time of the file’s introduction.

52. Quota Scholarship Scheme in Norway for Bachelor, Master, and PhD Students from Developing Countries By Norwegian Government (No longer offered)

The main objective of the Norwegian Quota Scholarship Scheme for developing countries is to contribute to capacity building through education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return. Most universities and university colleges in Norway participate in the Quota scheme. Most of the programs offered are at the Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programs. Additionally, each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would in an equivalent educational program.

53. Irish Aid Fellowships for Postgraduate Applicants from Developing Countries

Irish Aid Fellowships for Subject areas relating to Justice, Law and Order, Education, Macroeconomics Private Sector Development and Social Development, Gender, HIV/AIDS, Environment, and Governance, are awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and are targeted mainly at the countries in which Ireland has established development cooperation programs: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Timor Leste, and Vietnam, plus the Palestinian territories. Note that beneficiaries get the support to undertake higher-level education and training in Ireland or within the region.

63. Human Rights Fellowship Programme for African Descent in Switzerland by United Nation

The Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments, and mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent. The Programme will allow the participants to better contribute to the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of Afro-descendants in their respective countries. 65. Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme Netherlands

The MENA Scholarship Programme enables mid-career professionals from Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria, and Tunisia to undertake a short course in the Netherlands. Each year there are around 120 scholarships available, which are proportionally distributed among the participating countries. Ideally, half of the scholarships are allocated to female applicants. A MENA scholarship is a contribution to the costs of the selected short course and is intended to supplement the salary that the scholarship holder must continue to receive during the study period.
